Bonnie bonnie Scotland, there are few people in the world that do Christmas better than the Scots and Edinburgh is the epicenter of Scottish Christmas. Aye, the wind blows and you feel a wee shiver in your bones, but the comforting kind, the kind which lets you don a scarf, a warm coat and drink a mulled wine. Here are the top 5 activities to do in Edinburgh to create that Xmas buzz:
1: Edinburgh’s German Christmas Market:
There are few spots in the world you can visit that put you in more of a Christmas mood so quickly as Edinburgh. The sprawling market transforms the ‘New-town’ area of the city into a German market. Set against a stunning backdrop where you can see some of the cities’ oldest and most iconic buildings in the background, including a lit-up Edinburgh castle, making it a real spectacle. The market stalls are filled with amazing Christmas goodies to buy in lovely wooden stalls which seem to be almost endless as you snake your way around. For the more bold there is an ice rink for you to try your luck and a number of fare ground rides. It’s advised to wrap up in a warm christmas sweater and purchase a mulled cider while pondering your way around sampling foods, buying presents for loved ones and taking in all the buzz around. One of the great places to spend a crisp Christmas night in Edinburgh during December.
2. The City Ferris Wheel
Under the starry night sky or during the day you can take a ride on the huge purpose built Ferris wheel, located near the Christmas market, just off the Princes street Gardens giving you breathtaking views of the city. The huge wheel cuts a pretty picture on the Edinburgh sky line and its location means that when you get to the top you see the city in its full splendor, a perfect activity for a crisp December evening or day.
3: La Clique Noel:
The award winning La Clique Noel is an award winning show, originally born out of a successful Edinburgh Fringe run in 2004. The word ‘Hogmanay’ may ring a bell, you may even know what it means, but it has to be seen and felt to be believed. The true winter highlight of Edinburgh is the Hogmanay celebration as it sprawls across the city and captivates locals and tourists alike. There is a spectacular torchlight procession through the historic old town, it’s as weird as it is wonderful. On the 31st of December the street goes off for the famous Hogmanay Street party, a concert in Princes Street Gardens and a firework display to send off new years with a bang.
